Preparing for College
What's your dream? To be a teacher, a doctor, an engineer, a journalist, an entrepreneur? Thousands of successful careers start right here in Nebraska. Here's what it will take to attend most universities, state colleges and community colleges in Nebraska:
Preparation
- Take college prep, advanced placement and honors classes whenever you can.
- In 8th grade, plan high school coures to meet admission requirements.
- Watch deadlines for tests, applications and scholarships.
PSAT: 10th or 11th grade
SAT: 11th and/or 12th grade
ACT: 11th and/or 12th grade
Class Rank or Test Scores
- Top half of your high school class or
- Composite ACT score of 20 or higher or
- Total SAT score of 950 or higher
If you do not meet these qualifications, you may still be admitted if you can demonstrate your ability to do university-level work.
The Right Classes
Core requirements for admission: 16 academic units (1 unit - 1 academic year).
English
- 4 units.
- All must include intensive reading and writing; some speech and journalism courses may qualify.
Mathematics
- 3 units (4 for admission to UNL).
- Algebra 1 & 2 and geometry
Social Studies
- 3 units.
- 1 from American or world history.
- 1 from History, American government or geography.
- 1 from any social science discipline.
Natural Sciences
- 3 units.
- 2 from biology, chemistry, physics or eatrh sciences (1 of these must include laboratory instruction).
Foreign Language
- 2 units of same language
- You may qualify without this, but some colleges and universities require you take 2 semesters of foreign language and meet the general 16 unit admission requirements.

To succeed in college, take as many classes as possible that will improve reading and math skills.
